ENABLE Project

What is ENABLE?

ENABLE (European Network Against Bullying in Learning and Leisure Environments) is an EU-funded project which combats bullying and contributes to the well-being of young people aged 11-14 through a unique blend of social and emotional development and peer education. ENABLE takes a holistic and sustainable approach to reducing bullying through involving students, staff and parents/ carers. SWGfL is proud to be part of a European network of organisations coordinating the ENABLE project and tackling bullying in an innovative way. The target audience for ENABLE is young people aged 11-14 although the programme  and resources can be adapted for use by other ages by professionals. The SWGfL's role in ENABLE was to produce one of the two main resource components - the ENABLE 10 SEL (Social and Emotional Learning) lesson modules for schools. These modules aim to develop the social and emotional skills of young people by exploring the four areas of emotional intelligence – self-awareness, social awareness, self-management and relationship management. The lessons are designed to work hand in hand with the second major component of the ENABLE programme – the Peer Support Programme, created by the other UK partner Diana Award. The SEL lessons and Peer Support Programme complement each other in order to create and foster an environment where bullying is less likely to occur.

What does research tell us?

At the start of the project all partners took an extensive dive into existing SEL programmes. All of the SWGfL findings and conclusions can be found in their recently published research report: Bullying in Schools: A summary of research of anti-bullying initiatives.

Why implement ENABLE?

We at the Education Safeguarding Team at Kent County Council would suggest that Schools  consider rolling out ENABLE because of its unique approach of combining social and emotional development with peer education. This approach is based on research and based on proven techniques and programmes. ENABLE provides schools with 10 fully resources SEL lesson modules and a wholly planned programme for Peer Supporters. These resources are available now and are FREE!

The ENABLE resources are now ready and available to be downloaded from the SWGfL project website. Schools will find the 10 SEL modules as well as the Peer Support Programme resources as well as the essential "Making ENABLE work" document which will answer questions and provide useful guidance and help on how not only to roll out the programme but how to make it a success in your school.
