Assessing Pupils with English as an Additional Language

Robust English as an additional language (EAL) assessments and an understanding of English as an additional language pedagogy are essential if schools are to understand how to accelerate the progress of English as an additional language learners and accurately record their proficiency in English.

The Equality Diversity Inclusion Team - EDIT (formally Inclusion Support Service Kent (ISSK)) offer bespoke and centralised training to support English as an additional language coordinators, Inclusion Leads and other staff to effectively assess both newly arrived English as an additional language learners and advanced bilingual pupils.

Following this session staff will be able to:

  • confidently use a range of assessment tools to monitor and evaluate attainment of minority ethnic and English as an additional language learners
  • assess the position of their English as an additional language learner pupils against a five point scale of reading, writing and spoken language proficiency outlined by the Department for Education
  • set appropriate targets for individual English as an additional language learners
  • identify effective strategies to enable learners to reach their targets.

Our highly experienced advisory teachers will also be able to offer dedicated support in schools, modelling English as an additional language assessments, correlating this with the proficiency in English levels and how to set targets and track progress to accelerate learning. We refer to assessment tools such as Kent Steps, The Northern Association of Support Services for Equality and Achievement (NASSEA) and The Bell Foundation.
