Budget Monitoring for Headteachers

Brief Overview

This is a course aimed at newly appointed Headteachers/Senior Leaders or for those Headteachers who would like to refresh their understanding of why schools need to monitor budgets, what information is required to complete monitoring and the effect it can have on decision making.  How decision planning may change if the monitoring is showing differences to what was expected when the budget was set. How outside factors can affect decisions. 

Note:  this is a theory-based course and does not provide training on the use of the Budget Planning Software.

Schools Financial Services training team will be present to facilitate group activities.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of the session the delegates will be able to:

  • Understand the need for monitoring

Analyse a monitoring report. Understand what the figures are telling you

  • How monitoring a budget affects future planning
  • The possible effect on the School Improvement Plan
  • Recognise the links between monitoring a school’s budget and budget strategy including a change in a staffing structure
  • Challenge the information presented on a monitoring report
