Key Stage 1 Moderation of Writing and Mathematics

Audience: Primary
Single session
  • Key Stage 1

Brief Overview

Moderation and validation of teacher assessment judgements of Year 2 children's work in writing and mathematics against the non-statutory teacher assessment frameworks for Key Stage 1.

Year 2 teachers will work in small groups scrutinising the samples of children’s work, using the standards in the Teacher Assessment Frameworks [WTS, EXS and GDS only].

All moderation judgements are part of an optional process and should be used to support robust internal systems of moderation in school.

Year 3 teachers are invited to participate in the moderation.

Learning Outcomes

Enhanced Accuracy:

  • Our session will support teachers in making robust and precise judgements regarding the standards achieved by pupils at the end of Key Stage 1.

Alignment and Assurance:

  • By participating, schools will ensure that their assessment judgements align with the expectations outlined in the non-statutory teacher assessment frameworks.
  • Provide schools with the reassurance that their judgements have been validated by LA approved moderators.

Evidence to bring:

For each child in the sample, all Year 2 teachers are advised to bring evidence from September onwards that supports teacher assessments in:

  • Independent writing across a range of text types and curriculum areas.
  • Independent mathematics that shows fluency, reasoning and problem solving from across a range of work.
  • The Teacher Assessment Framework.

Please bring pupils' original work - photocopies will not be accepted.

Please bring sufficient evidence from your class of children who are working at each standard [WTS, EXS, GDS] if possible. Most teachers can moderate between 3 and 5 pupils’ work in both maths and writing in the time allocated.
