Whole School Safeguarding Training Pack for DSLs 2023-2024

This resource is to support DSLs in schools provide staff training themselves whilst following national guidance and local Kent processes.

Please note: from 1 April 2023 this product will be produced by Kent County Council. For any queries relating to this product please email the Education Safeguarding Service.

The statutory guidance ‘Keeping Children Safe in Education’ (KCSIE) requires all staff working in schools and colleges to undergo safeguarding and child protection training. This training should be provided at induction and be regularly updated in line with advice from the local three safeguarding partners. In addition, all staff should receive regular safeguarding and child protection updates as required, and at least annually, to provide them with relevant skills and knowledge to safeguard children effectively.

To support Designated Safeguarding Leads (DSLs) in schools provide staff training themselves in line with national guidance and local Kent processes, the Education Safeguarding Service have produced a PowerPoint presentation template and supplementary guidance document.

By purchasing this downloadable resource pack, you will be granted access to a PowerPoint presentation and PDF document to use for the academic year 2023-24. The Education Safeguarding Service will update the pack as required following any changes to relevant guidance; please ensure you check for any updates before the content is delivered.

Some content specifically addresses procedures for Kent schools in line with the Kent Safeguarding Children Multi-Agency Partnership (KSCMP) procedures, however, schools and colleges outside of Kent are still able to use the content and should adapt the slides to reflect their own local procedures.

This training content and pack should only be used and delivered by an appropriately trained DSL (recommended to be the lead DSL) and is for use within your school only.

The pack is based on the KCSIE 2023 guidance and is suitable for use in the academic year 2023-24.

he Whole School Safeguarding Training Pack for DSLs 2023-2024 can be purchased individually, or it can also be purchased as part of the Safeguarding Support Package for Schools 2023-24.

This pack provides DSLs with an easy to use and comprehensive PowerPoint presentation template which can be adapted according to their school’s specific context, as well as time available. The presentation includes an optional script and reflects the current statutory guidance, including ‘Keeping Children Safe in Education’ as well as the local Kent processes. The presentation template should be personalised by DSLs to reflect their own schools’ policies and includes suggested activities to help explore and enhance staff knowledge.

A summary of the key content includes:

  • key legislation and updates
  • categories and indicators of abuse and neglect
  • safe culture, including allegations and whistleblowing
  • what to do if staff are concerned about a child
  • local support and processes, including the Kent Support Levels Guidance
  • safeguarding priorities, as identified in Annex B of KCSIE
  • online safety.

To further support DSLs in delivering staff training, the Education Safeguarding Service have also produced a helpful guidance document with supporting material and useful background information. The guidance document includes suggestions to create a safe environment for training delivery and contains a variety of activities which can be used in longer training sessions or to provide staff updates throughout the year.

This pack will enable DSLs to be confident that their staff have the relevant safeguarding and child protection skills and knowledge required and that they understand the expectations and procedures in place within their school. These resources will assist both new and experienced DSLs deliver up-to-date staff training and will help ensure that their school is a safe place for children and staff.
